Architecture 1950s Kitchen Appliances

Kitchens have come a long way since the 1950s. The kitchen in the 1950s looked very different from kitchens today. 1950s kitchen featuring plastic, natural (soft) colors, such as turquoise or water, pink and yellow (cottage colors), Formica and chrome kitchen chairs and table set matching Formica kitchen counter.

Classic 1950s Kitchen Appliances

1950s kitchen appliances were mainly built-in such as an electric stove top with an oven, a refrigerator, and a washer and dryer. The appliances color were typically bright colored with rounded corners. In 1956, the dishwasher was already available,  yet most people could not afford to have one in their kitchen. Appliance distributors also added new features of appliances, such as stoves with automatic timers, an ice cube maker to refrigerators,  and swing out shelving. Gas and electric stoves had already been available for years ago, but the 1950s introduced colored appliances with easy-to-clean glaze surfaces. there are many options for coloring, white was no longer the only available option, moreover, all of the kitchen appliances could be matched in color.

The electric refrigerators of the 1950s were more efficient and streamlined than their former, as well as much cheaper. Such as stoves, they were now available in colored finishes, ease homeowners to put together individualized kitchen decorating plans. At this time, Refrigerators were still relatively small; some models were even small enough to fit under the countertops. Electric mixers were also well-know in kitchens of the 1950s. These devices were relatively expensive and heavy compared to modern mixers, and were made of metal, glass and sturdy plastic. Some mixers not only included juicer but also meat grinder attachments.

The 1950s also saw the introduction of the electric ‘coffepot’. Whereas stovetop percolators had been popular for some time. This electric models allowed cooks to make coffee without the worry of the coffee boiling over or burning.
